Hinoki International School Receives New Charter from Saginaw Valley State University; Accepting Applications for Kindergarten through 5th Grade; Hosting Open House February 24th.

Today, at a regular meeting of the Board of Control of Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), board members voted to approve a 3-year charter for Hinoki International School, Michigan’s first dual-immersion Japanese-English elementary school. Hinoki will become the 20th charter school currently authorized by SVSU.

Founded in 2010 with a single kindergarten class in Livonia, Hinoki has added one grade level per year, expanding to a student body of 135 students in 2013-14, and attracting families from all backgrounds in Wayne, Washtenaw, and Oakland Counties. For 2015-16, Hinoki will be enrolling students in grades K-5, at a new facility in Farmington Hills, which the school will share with Schoolhouse Montessori Academy’s preschool programs.

The public charter school is the first in Michigan, and one of only a few nationwide, to teach students all subjects in English and Japanese. Hinoki’s curriculum was developed in partnership with education experts at Eastern Michigan University as part of a $560,000 federal charter school implementation grant, and continues to be refined to better meet the needs of students and their families.

Dr. Craig Douglas, Director of SVSU’s School-University Partnership Office, commented, "We welcome Hinoki International School to our group of public school academies. We expect many educational connections with SVSU to emerge immediately and well into the future."

Dr. Anne Hooghart, Hinoki School Board President, stated: “We at Hinoki are thrilled about our new partnership with Saginaw Valley State University.

Their commitment to innovative global education and intercultural/multilingual education is evident. SVSU has a growing Japanese language program and a sister university in Shikoku, Japan, and we hope to establish mutually-beneficial relationships.”

On Tuesday, February 24, Hinoki International School will be hosting an open house at its new location, 29230 West 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills, from 6:00-8:30pm, for those who wish to learn more about Hinoki’s special “50/50 immersion” English-Japanese curriculum for elementary students.

Applications for admission are available at the school website (http://www.hinoki-school.org/), from office@hinoki-school.org, or at the Open House.
Open enrollment is from February 24th through mid-March. # # #
